MaxiMatic EPC-807 Electric Pressure Cooker Review

January 13, 2014

I thought it was important to begin this review by stating, outright, that I am an experienced pressure cooker user. I’ve had one in my home for years, and am not necessarily easy to please when it comes to my kitchen appliances. So, when I had the chance to give the MaxiMatic EPC-807, after receiving it as a gift, I jumped at the chance. After all, I’m always looking for new and improved models that offer great features and added convenience.

In this review, I’ll offer you a detailed look at the pros and cons of this product, as well as some of its key features and specs. I will also share my honest opinion as to whether it’s really worth the investment (if you are planning on purchasing it), or if you should possibly consider another similarly priced unit.

The Specs…

The Maxi Matic EPC-807 holds up to eight quarts, and measures 15 x 15.2 x 15 inches. The weight of the product is 18 pounds.

The housing of the appliance is constructed of brushed stainless steel, and the 8 quart removable cooking pot includes a non-stick coating, for quick and easy clean up after meal preparation.

It retails for around $115.00 plus shipping and handling if you are purchasing it online.

The Features…

The variety of features that this unit offers are, to be quite honest, rather impressive. It has six different functions: Rice, Potatoes, Beans and Grains, Meat and Poultry, Soup & Stew, and Browning. It also allows you to keep your food warm after it’s done cooking (for up to 12 hours, in fact). The browning feature means that you can sear in the flavor of meats right in the pot, rather than having to dirty another one and then transfer it to the cooker.

The 9 hour delay timer gives you the option to program cooking in advance, so that you can set it at night and wake up to a delicious porridge breakfast in the morning. Also, you can customize your cooking settings with this unit (which is rather rare). The programmable pressurized cooking timer can be set for between 0 to 99 minutes.

Another unique feature is the “Automatic resumption” function. Essentially, if the power goes off for a short period of time while the unit is cooking, it will resume cooking when the power is restored.

The Pros…

This product is extremely easy to use, and even easier to clean. These are two big pluses, in my book, given that a vast majority of the pressure cookers out today can be complicated to set up and actually cook with. The insert that it comes with is non-stick and removable, so you can just take it out and quickly clean it after you’re done with your meal preparation.

Secondly, the fact that is has a delay timer is great, because you can set it ahead of time and have your meal hot and ready to eat when you get home from a long day at work (or wake up to a warm all in one breakfast).

Also, it’s very energy efficient. You can actually reduce your energy consumption by up to 70%, when you compare it to cooking on the stove top or in the oven. Therefore, this unit also happens to be one of the more Eco-Friendly options. And (I just had to mention this) the fact that you can automatically resume cooking if your power goes out, once its restored, is wonderful. I live in an area that is prone to frequent power outages, and now I don’t have to worry about my meal being ruined if the power goes out when I’m not at home and the cookers on.

The Cons…

There are only a few downsides with this unit, all of which are very minor, in my opinion. Firstly, it is a bit bulky. It will probably take up a great deal of space on your counter, as well as your cabinets when you store it away after use. Also, this cooker only really operates at a high setting, which means that you may have to adjust cooking times for recipes.

Another key drawback is the actual design of the item. The touch panel is constructed of a less expensive, lower quality plastic, as are the feet of the cooker. So, they may not last for as long as the durable body or insert will (given that they are made using quality materials). Not to mention that the cheaper feet may scratch up your counter top if yours are made of a more sensitive surface.

One last thing that I have to mention is that the delay timer isn’t as long as some of the other models. In fact, the Maxi Matic EPC-808 (the next in the series line) comes with a 24 hour advanced timer. So, if you are planning on setting the cooker well ahead of time on a regular basis, then you may want to consider the newer unit.

The Bottom Line…

If you are looking for a pressure cooker that is a cinch to use and won’t cost you a small fortune, then you’ll want to think about getting the MaxiMatic EPC-808. It feeds a family of 6-8 with no problem at all, thanks to its 8 quart capacity, and is very easy to clean up after meal prep. It’s quiet when operating and seals in food odors, so you won’t even really know that it’s on while you’re pressurizing meals. Best of all, it can cook a large chicken or roast with ease, in a fraction of the time it would take you on the stove top or in the oven.

The Features…

This unit features an 8 hour countdown timer, as well as an 8 hour advanced timer. As such, you can cook larger meals without having to reset the appliance, and can even set it to turn on while you are at work (to come home to a warm meal that’s ready when you are).

It comes with three pressure cooker settings: low (2.5 psi), medium (7.5 psi), and high (15 psi). While the high setting will allow you to cook meats and meals quickly, the low setting can enable you to prepare vegetables and fruity desserts with ease.  In addition to the pressure cooker features, you can also steam, brown, warm, and slow cook with just the push of a button.

This appliance features a unique oval design, as well, that allows you to prepare roasts or other bulky food items that wouldn’t normally fit into other electric pressure cookers. The cool touch exterior is constructed from a brushed stainless steel, making the unit finger print resistant, easy to clean, and safe to use, even when the cooker is turned on.

The Pros…

The sheer capacity of this unit is what makes it stand apart from the rest. It fits up to 8.5 quarts, and is oval, which means that you won’t have any trouble fitting a whole chicken into the inner pot and cooking it in a fraction of the time.  The fact that the inner pot is non-stick is also a big plus, since you won’t have to worry about scraping away food remnants when you’re done enjoying your meal and it’s time to tidy the kitchen.

The Big Boss 8748 1300 watt Electric Pressure Cooker also comes with a measuring cup and spoon, which is a nice little bonus. Not to mention the wide range of other safety parts and features that it’s equipped with. The pressure regulator knob is a particularly useful part, as it enables you to keep an eye on the pressure settings and release the pressure quickly if the need arises.

One last pro that I had to mention was the unit’s warmer settings, which I use regularly. You can just switch on the cooker, let it work its magic, and once it’s done it will automatically turn off the pressure and keep your food piping hot.

The Cons…

There are two minor drawbacks with this unit. However, let me just say that these particular cons aren’t probably enough of a hindrance to deter you from purchasing this appliance if you are looking for one with a larger capacity. Firstly, the fact that it doesn’t come with a steaming or cooking rack is a bit disappointing. You can purchase one on your own, but for the price, it should probably come with some sort of a rack accessory, in my opinion.

Another small complaint is that the advance timer is rather short. A number of other models, such as MaxiMatic EPC-808 8 quart electric pressure cooker gives you the option to set the timer for up to 24 hours in advance, while this one only allows for 8 hours. So, if you wanted a cooker that could be set well ahead of when you wanted it to kick on (such as if you were out of town over night and wanted to come home the next day to hot meal), then you may want to go with another model.

The Bottom Line…

This is actually the largest pressure cooker that we’ve reviewed here on the site. As such, it’s ideal for larger meals or roasts. It also happens to be the perfect cooker for those who entertain often and need to have an electric pressure cooker on hand that can whip up several servings at a time, or to keep foods warm for when guests arrive. If you happen to be in search of an appliance that can also can foods, then this is the ideal option, as it also has that function.

Overall, even though it’s price tag is a bit steeper than some of the other models we’ve featured, you do get quite a bit for the money. The fact that it offers a 15 PSI setting is another big plus, especially if you want to work with recipes that are designed for traditional pressure cookers, as it makes time estimates and measurements for your favorite dishes quick and convenient.

The Specs…

The MaxiMatic EPC-808 Elite Platinum Pressure Cooker holds up to eight quarts. It measures 15 x 15.3 x 15 inches, and weighs about 17 pounds. The shipping weight of the product is approximately 22 pounds.

The housing of the appliance is constructed of brushed stainless steel, and the 8 quart removable cooking pot includes a non-stick coating, which makes for quick and easy clean up after meal preparation.

This model retails for around $95.00 plus shipping and handling online.

The Features…

Given that this model goes for under $100, the variety of features that it does offer are quite impressive. It can out 14 different functions, which is by far the most that I’ve seen any pressure cooker do in this price range. Its functions include: reheating foods, cooking brown and white rice, preparing vegetables and fish, and making some mouth watering soups.

However, it can also prepare potatoes, desserts, pork roasts, ribs, chicken, beans, stew, and even wild rice and grains. Not to mention that it has a browning and keep warm function, as well. As an added bonus, you can use the Maxi Matic Pressure Cooker to can.

The 24-hour delay timer gives you the ability to program cooking in advance, so that you can set it in the morning and come home to a delicious meal in the afternoon or evening. The keep warm feature works for up to 12 hours, and helps to ensure that your foods are hot and ready when you are.

The Pros…

Where do I even begin when it comes to the pros of this product? Not only does it make cooking meats and a variety of other foods a cinch, but the clean up involved is a fraction of what’s usually required after traditional meal prep. Plus, the fact that the inner pot is removable is an added perk, given that you won’t have to worry about scraping food items from the bottom after you’ve enjoyed your delicious meal.

Secondly, it has a feature that I haven’t seen with too many other electric pressure cookers, wherein it automatically resumes cooking one power is restored if you have a power outage. So, if you live in area that’s prone to brief electricity outages, you can rest assured that you’ll still have a great meal waiting for you, even if you’re away from the house all day.

Another thing that is definitely worth mentioning is the fact that the programmable functions make it ideal for those who may be new to pressure cooking, or even experienced pressure cookers who don’t want to have to deal with PSI and figuring out cooking items for each meal. You can just choose the food that you are preparing, push a button, and get cooking.

Essentially, you won’t have to use another cooking appliance or gadget when preparing your meals if you have the MaxiMatic EPC-808 Pressure Cooker in your kitchen. You can saute veggies before steaming them to make them softer, brown roasts to seal in their flavor, and even reheat leftovers in half the time (without sacrificing any flavor).

The Cons…

There are just a couple of drawbacks to this pressure cooker. They aren’t very significant, but are worth mentioning. Firstly, the fact that it does have so many programmable functions can be a bit challenging, especially if you want full control over your cooking settings. The good news is that you can access customized settings if you want to adjust the cooking time or the level of pressurization.

Also, the design of this machine is a bit flawed. Many cookers these days offer a fingerprint-proof design, to reduce the amount of clean up on the outside of the appliance. However, this one does not. The plastic lid can become dirtied quite easily, and is hard to remove for washing.

Lastly, the unit is rather large, given that it fits up to 8 quarts. That’s great if you need to prepare larger amounts of food at once, but you probably won’t want to leave it on your counter after you are through using it.

The Bottom Line…

If you’re looking for an electric pressure cooker that does a bit of everything, and don’t mind that it takes up a bit more space than your average pressure cooker, then the MaxiMatic EPC-808 Elite Platinum should be at the top of your list. It has a lower price point, is extremely easy to clean, and has a wide variety of useful features.

You can just select from one of its many programmable functions and make meals in a snap. Honestly, the only regret that you’ll probably have after purchasing this appliance is that you didn’t get one ages ago.

Instant Pot IP-LUX60 – The Features…

The Instant Pot IP-LUX60 doesn’t disappoint in terms of features. It also features a delay timer, which you can set up to 24 hours in advance, which is ideal for those who be constantly on-the-go. You can also manually set the cooker to have 120 minutes of continuous cook time.

The panel also allows you to set the pressure cooker for “automatic warming”, which keeps meals hot until you’re ready to serve them. There are three different temperature settings to choose from if you’d like to use the cooker to saute or slow cook foods as well.

The 3-ply bottom stainless steel pot that you’ll find inside is durable, and allows for easy clean up. The brushed stainless steel exterior of the appliance is resistant to dirt and fingerprints, and its design is both sleek and elegant. Instant Pot IP-LUX60 – The Pros…

It’s no surprise that this particular electric pressure cooker is so highly rated, for the simple fact that there are a myriad of pros associated with owning one. First and foremost, it is able to carry out each of its functions with efficiency and ease. As a pressure cooker, it seals well and traps in food odors and juices. However, it’s also a great slow cooker and steamer, among other things.

By using this pressure cooker, you’ll reduce your cooking time by up to 70%. So, you can whip up dinner in a matter of an hour, instead of the 4 hours it would have normally taken you to cook  that roast. Clean up is also a breeze, given that it has a non-stick interior.

The fact that this pressure cooker has such an innovative and elegant design (and is fingerprint proof) means that you can leave the Instant Pot pressure cooker on your counter without having to worry about it becoming an eye sore. So, if you’re concerned about the aesthetics of your electric pressure cooker, then you’ll definitely want to put this model on your list of cookers to consider.

It also happens to be one of the safest models, thanks to its safety lid lock, which prevents the lid from accidentally opening when the appliance is pressurized. Not to mention that the magnetic sensor included in the design allows you to see whether the lid is properly secured, and the “smart detection” feature lets you know if any fluid is leaking whilst your cooking. These are all big pluses, especially if you have children in the home.

Best of all, it’s extremely energy efficient. In fact, you can reduce your energy consumption by up to 70%, as opposed to cooking with traditional methods. As such, this model is also one of the most Eco-Friendly models available today.

 81tFt2lY9oL._SL1500_ (Small)

Instant Pot IP-LUX60 – The Cons…

There is very little to say regarding the cons of this product. There are only a couple of drawbacks, one of which is it’s rice cooking option. Though it cooks the rice quickly, it can have a tendency to leave the rice sticky. Also, in some instances, you may find that the rice comes out grayish in color. However, if you are planning on getting this primarily for its pressure cooking option, then you won’t really need to worry about this con whatsoever.

The other setback that is worth mentioning is that, if you are cooking with quite a bit of liquid, then it can take some time for the cooker to build pressure. So, if you like to make soups quite often and are worried about making them in a hurry, then you may want to think twice about this model. With that being said, the end result is flavorful, and still only takes a fraction of the time it would normally require on the stove top.

 71FQb07zWfL._SL1500_ (Small)

Instant Pot IP-LUX60 – The Bottom Line…

Overall, this product is one of the best electric pressure cookers you can possibly own. This is especially true if you’re looking for a cooker that is multifunctional and affordable. It’s comparable to the Cuisinart 1000-Watt 6-Quart Electric Pressure Cooker,  another popular model, but is far more versatile.

If you’re looking for an electric pressure cooker that allows you to steam vegetables to perfection, make mouth watering stews, and prepare time consuming meals in under half the time, then the  Instant Pot IP-LUX60 should be at the top of your list. It’s easy to use, it consistently offers meals that are nutrient-packed, and enables you to make your favorite dishes quickly and conveniently.

Feel free to peruse the site and read reviews for some of the other top electric pressure cookers on the market today. Each offers details about the product specifications and features, as well as an unbiased look at the pros and cons.
