Deni 9740 Electric 4.2-Quart Pressure Cooker

January 2, 2014

Have you been scouring the web to find just the right electric pressure cooker for you and your family? If so, then you’ve definitely come to the right place. I know, from first hand experience, that the sheer abundance of choices out there today can make it challenging to find the cooker that has all the features you want at a price you can afford. As such, I thought I’d share my honest opinion about one of the most highly rated electric pressure cookers available today…the Deni 9740 Electric 4.2-Quart Pressure Cooker.

Sure this cooker may be a popular choice, but is it really worth your hard earned dollar? Do the cons far outweigh the pros, and is there possibly another selection that you may want to consider instead of this Deni model? In this review, I’ll take an up close look at its features, specs, and even the up and down sides to owning this product.

The Specs…

The Deni Pressure Cooker, holds up to 4.2 quarts and measures 15 x 11.5 x 12 inches. It weighs approximately 6.1 pounds , and the shipping weight of the product is 14.3 pounds.

It comes standard with a removable cooking pot coated with a non-stick material for easy clean up, which features stay-cool side handles. The exterior of the appliance is constructed from brushed stainless steel.

This model retails for around $115.00 plus shipping and handling online.

The Features…

This electric pressure cooker offers a number of useful features, including the ability to cook and both high and low pressure settings and a programmable timer for added convenience. The digital control panel allows you to access programmed settings with the touch of a button, making this unit extremely easy to use.

The delay cooking time feature allows you to set the cooker in advance, while the programmed settings include a wide range of options, including: warming, browning, and slow cooking.

For added security, they’ve also equipped it with a steam release valve, so that you can avoid pressure cooking related burns. The stay cool side handles also allow you to grab the unit without risk of injury.

The Pros…

One of the most significant pros of this product is that it operates very quietly. You won’t have to worry about the loud hissing or humming sound that a pressure cooking usually makes, nor will you have to put up with escaping food odors. The seals fit pretty snugly, which helps to seal in any smells.

Secondly, the fact that it has a non-stick interior is great for easy clean up. You won’t have to worry about scraping last night dinner out of the pot if you want to let the dishes go until the morning (which I tend to do on some occasions). It’s very easy to use as well. Some electric pressure cookers that you’ll come across today are almost impossible to operate (and their instruction booklets read like NASA manuals). However, this one is simple and straightforward, which is a big plus.

Also, it’s perfect if you want to make meals for 2 to 3 people, or side dishes, given its smaller quart capacity. You can save power, as it uses less energy than if you were to cook on the stove top, and allows you to seal in the flavors and juices of your foods. In addition, your foods actually contain more of their natural vitamins and nutrients, since you won’t have to cook them for as long and won’t have to use as much liquid.

The Cons…

There are a few cons that you’ll probably notice when using this product. First and foremost, it is not the most attractive pressure cooker on the market today, and it does take up quite a bit of room. In fact, you probably won’t want to leave it out on your counter, but will discover that it takes up a lot of space in your cabinets.

Also, it doesn’t have steaming capabilities, unless you purchase a steaming rack that you can insert into the unit, especially if you plan on steaming rice in the appliance. This means that you’ll have to pay more on top of what you’ve already spent on the unit (and it’s not necessarily the cheapest model available today).

The fact that you cannot simmer the food, as you can with the similarly priced Cuisinart CPC-600 is a minor setback, given that you will have to do that on the stove top after you’ve already pressure cooked your meals. For example, if you want to add in ingredients to a risotto or casserole, you will have to do that after the fact. This not only takes time, but requires that you dirty another pot in the process.

The Bottom Line…

This is a great unit if you’re looking for one that primarily pressure cooks. However, if you’re in search of an electric pressure cooker that simmers, steams, and cooks rice with ease, then you may want to look elsewhere. Also, it’s not really the least expensive option out there, especially given that it doesn’t include a variety of bells and whistles.

With that being said, its design is durable and it is very efficient when it comes to pressure cooking. It’s ideal for a smaller family, or even if you are only cooking for one and want some leftovers. Also, if you are new to the world of pressure cooking, this may be a great option for you, given that the programmable settings are easy to use and you probably won’t have any trouble figuring out how to use the cooker once you unpack it and plug it in. In fact, you’ll most likely be able to get cooking right away.

The Features…

The West Bend pressure cooker features a  6-quart round cooking pot that includes a non-stick exterior and pot insert. It offers a variety of adjustable settings, allowing you to perform a number of useful cooking functions with just one appliance. You can pressure cook on a low or high setting, slow cook, and even steam. It can also browns meats, as well, to seal in their natural juices, and cooks rice with ease.

The warm setting enables you to  keep meals warm until you’re ready to eat, which makes this product a good match for those who want to set it and forget it until dinner rolls around. The appliance also features seven different safety features, which include: a cool touch locking lid (which includes a built in pressure release dial), cool touch technology design for both the cover and base of the unit, and durable handles.

The Pros…

Without a doubt, the best thing about this pressure cooker is that it is it so easy to use, not to mention that clean up is a breeze. If you have a busy schedule, then this can make a world of difference, given that traditional cooking clean up can be very time consuming. Not with this electric pressure cooker though. In fact, it even features a non-stick exterior, which is rare for cookers in this price range.

Also, even though the product description doesn’t mention this (oddly enough) this unit operates almost silently, and doesn’t really produce that much heat. That means you can use it even in the summertime, without having to worry about warming up the house.

The size of this particular appliance is also just right. It’s large enough to fit a large roast or chicken, but doesn’t take up too much space on the counter top, like an eight quart model would. It’s perfect for a family of four to six.

The bonuses that it comes with are a big perk, as well. It includes a cooking rack, measuring cup, spoon, and even a spoon holder. And the condensation cup is great for keeping liquids off the counter and in the cooker where they belong.

It can also make foods that you may not necessarily think would be ideal for a pressure cooking appliance, such as fluffy white rice and mac and cheese, among many other tasty side dishes. You just set the timer and pre-set, and walk away, it’s as simple as that. In a fraction of the time that it would normally take to prepare delectable meals on the stove top, you’ll have nutrient-packed dishes with a minimal amount of kitchen tidying involved.

The Cons…

Honestly, there are very few bad things that I have to say about this electric pressure cooker. It doesn’t come with detailed instructions or a recipe book, so you’ll need to go to the manufacturer’s site, and pick up a pressure cooker book  (or look online) to get ideas for some tasty recipes.

Also, while it may not be as large as some other similarly priced pressure cookers, it is still quite substantial. So, if you only have a small space to store the unit or don’t have very much room on your counter to place the cooker while you are using it, then you may want to think about getting a smaller unit (such as the 4 quart GoWISE USA 6-in-1 Electric Stainless-Steel Programmable Pressure Cooker).

Lastly, the higher pressure cooker setting does have a rather low PSI. So, if you are planning on using the manual setting options and want to fully customize your cooking time, then you’ll want to keep that in mind, especially if you’d like to make foods that may require a higher pressure to cook through.

The Bottom Line…

I would highly recommend this for anyone who is looking for an affordably priced electric pressure cooker that gets the job done without breaking your budget. It can make meats in a fraction of the time, and help you to prepare side dishes with no fuss. The fact that it does come with a one year warranty gives you added peace of mind, and its myriad of safety features makes it safe for use in homes with smaller children.

Overall, the West Bend Pressure Cooker is definitely worth giving a try if you’re looking for an electric pressure cooker that also doubles as a rice cooker and slow cooker.

The Specs…

The MaxiMatic EPC-808 Elite Platinum Pressure Cooker holds up to eight quarts. It measures 15 x 15.3 x 15 inches, and weighs about 17 pounds. The shipping weight of the product is approximately 22 pounds.

The housing of the appliance is constructed of brushed stainless steel, and the 8 quart removable cooking pot includes a non-stick coating, which makes for quick and easy clean up after meal preparation.

This model retails for around $95.00 plus shipping and handling online.

The Features…

Given that this model goes for under $100, the variety of features that it does offer are quite impressive. It can out 14 different functions, which is by far the most that I’ve seen any pressure cooker do in this price range. Its functions include: reheating foods, cooking brown and white rice, preparing vegetables and fish, and making some mouth watering soups.

However, it can also prepare potatoes, desserts, pork roasts, ribs, chicken, beans, stew, and even wild rice and grains. Not to mention that it has a browning and keep warm function, as well. As an added bonus, you can use the Maxi Matic Pressure Cooker to can.

The 24-hour delay timer gives you the ability to program cooking in advance, so that you can set it in the morning and come home to a delicious meal in the afternoon or evening. The keep warm feature works for up to 12 hours, and helps to ensure that your foods are hot and ready when you are.

The Pros…

Where do I even begin when it comes to the pros of this product? Not only does it make cooking meats and a variety of other foods a cinch, but the clean up involved is a fraction of what’s usually required after traditional meal prep. Plus, the fact that the inner pot is removable is an added perk, given that you won’t have to worry about scraping food items from the bottom after you’ve enjoyed your delicious meal.

Secondly, it has a feature that I haven’t seen with too many other electric pressure cookers, wherein it automatically resumes cooking one power is restored if you have a power outage. So, if you live in area that’s prone to brief electricity outages, you can rest assured that you’ll still have a great meal waiting for you, even if you’re away from the house all day.

Another thing that is definitely worth mentioning is the fact that the programmable functions make it ideal for those who may be new to pressure cooking, or even experienced pressure cookers who don’t want to have to deal with PSI and figuring out cooking items for each meal. You can just choose the food that you are preparing, push a button, and get cooking.

Essentially, you won’t have to use another cooking appliance or gadget when preparing your meals if you have the MaxiMatic EPC-808 Pressure Cooker in your kitchen. You can saute veggies before steaming them to make them softer, brown roasts to seal in their flavor, and even reheat leftovers in half the time (without sacrificing any flavor).

The Cons…

There are just a couple of drawbacks to this pressure cooker. They aren’t very significant, but are worth mentioning. Firstly, the fact that it does have so many programmable functions can be a bit challenging, especially if you want full control over your cooking settings. The good news is that you can access customized settings if you want to adjust the cooking time or the level of pressurization.

Also, the design of this machine is a bit flawed. Many cookers these days offer a fingerprint-proof design, to reduce the amount of clean up on the outside of the appliance. However, this one does not. The plastic lid can become dirtied quite easily, and is hard to remove for washing.

Lastly, the unit is rather large, given that it fits up to 8 quarts. That’s great if you need to prepare larger amounts of food at once, but you probably won’t want to leave it on your counter after you are through using it.

The Bottom Line…

If you’re looking for an electric pressure cooker that does a bit of everything, and don’t mind that it takes up a bit more space than your average pressure cooker, then the MaxiMatic EPC-808 Elite Platinum should be at the top of your list. It has a lower price point, is extremely easy to clean, and has a wide variety of useful features.

You can just select from one of its many programmable functions and make meals in a snap. Honestly, the only regret that you’ll probably have after purchasing this appliance is that you didn’t get one ages ago.

Cuisinart CPC-600 1000-Watt 6-Quart Electric Pressure Cooker (Brushed Stainless and Matte Black)

December 28, 2013

Cuisinart is a name that is synonymous with quality (and often a rather high price tag). However, when I came across the Cuisinart CPC-600 Electric Pressure Cooker for a great deal, I jumped at the chance to take it home with me and give it a try. After all, I’ve been using pressure cookers for many years now, and am always hoping to find the perfect product that does everything I want it to do without costing a fortune.

The Cuisinart CPC-600 Electric Pressure Cooker offers a wide range of bells and whistles, high quality craftsmanship, and a variety of other perks. However, there are some drawbacks to this particular model. Take a look at my in depth review to get my unbiased opinion on this Cuisinart cooker, which even includes a quick glance at the specs and features.

The Specs…

The Cuisinart CPC-600 measures 12-1/5 by 12-1/5 by 13-1/5 inches, and weighs 14.2 pounds. It comes standard with a 3-year limited warranty, and holds up to six quarts. It utilizes 1000 watts, making it both energy efficient (especially when compared to other electric pressure cookers) and efficient.

Its design includes cool-touch handles, and a nonstick cooking pot and trivet that is also dishwasher-safe. The housing of the appliance is constructed of stainless steel. A recipe book is also included with the item, to offer ideas on what you can make quickly and conveniently with your new pressure cooker.

This model generally retails for around $100.00 plus shipping online.

The Features…

This product is packed with a number of useful features. It includes six different settings, which allow you create just about any food item in a fraction of the time it would normally take. Other than the typically low pressure and high pressure programmable settings, the unit features the following: a browning option (which allows you to sear and brown meats before pressure cooking them), a saute setting (to soften vegetables before steaming them), a simmer preset (in order to cook your liquids at a lower temperature), and a keep warm option (to keep your pressure cooked foods warm for up to 12 hours).

The brushed stainless steel housing is fingerprint-proof, making it easy to keep clean, and the unit features a digital thermostat for your convenience. It offers a wide range of programmed settings and cooking options, all of which can be accessed through the push button control panel.

The Pros…

One of the most convincing arguments for buying this product, as opposed to other similarly priced models, is that it is extremely easy to use and clean. The fact that it includes dishwasher-safe components makes it a cinch to tidy up the kitchen after meals, and the touch button control panel is simple and straightforward.

The fact that you can do so many functions with this cooker is also a plus. For example, you can saute meats before cooking them in order to enhance the flavor and seal in the juices, and you are also able to simmer food items after the fact if you want to alter their texture or add in any extra ingredients.

Another key perk is that you can reduce your cooking time by up to 70%. That means you can make healthy, nutritious, flavorful dinners in a fraction of the time that it would take you to make them on the stove top. This is ideal for those who are always on-the-go, or would like to spend more time with their family rather than prepping meals.

The fact that this pressure cooker has such an elegant and clean design is a big pro. You can just leave the cooker on your counter, without being embarrassed about it when guests come over. Not to mention that it is a Cuisinart product, which is synonymous with top end kitchen appliances. So, you know that you’re getting a pressure cooker that is going to stand the test of time.

Last, but certainly not least, you only have to use a bit of liquid with this pressure cooker, so you know that your foods aren’t losing their vitamins and minerals when cooking in it, nor are they going to lose their natural flavors. As such, you can prepare restaurant quality meals right at home, without breaking the bank.

The Cons…

There are a couple of drawbacks with this particular electric pressure cooker that are definitely worth mentioning. Firstly, the red float valve that is found just under the plastic cover of the cooker has been known to stick. When this happens, it won’t allow the unit to pressurize properly and steam will pour out. You’ll generally just need to tap it in order for it to come loose again. However, it may be a minor design flaw that you should consider.

Another setback is that it may not be as versatile as some other similarly priced models, such as the Instant Pot IP-LUX60 (which is also a rice cooker and slow cooker). So, if you are looking for an appliance that just a lot more than pressure cook, then you may want to consider another option.

The last key con doesn’t have anything to do with the cooker itself, but the manual that comes along with it. It lacks a few key pieces of information, such as the PSI at which the unit works. It may also be a bit difficult to actually operate some functions of the product, thanks to the disorganized directions. However, you can always hop online or contact the company directly if anything needs clarification.

The Bottom Line…

Overall, this product is an outstanding pressure cooker. There are just a few quirks you may have to work through. Other than that though, the features it has make it one of the best models available today.

If you’re looking for a great electric pressure cooker that also sautees and simmers, then this appliance is perfect for you. This is especially true if you are planning on making a wide range of food items in your cooker, such as vegetables, risottos, or meats, given that its variety of programmable settings allows you to create main dishes, side dishes, and just about anything else you can think of.

Also, the fact that you can set the timer to keep your meal warm for up to 12 hours is a huge perk that you won’t find with too many other models. So, if you’re on the go all of the time and want a pressure cooker that helps you to keep your meals piping hot, even if you have a busy schedule, then you’ll definitely want to consider the Cuisinart CPC-600.
