Nesco Pressure Cooker PC4-14 – 4 qt.

January 12, 2014

Finding the best electric pressure cooker can be quite challenging, especially since there are so many models to choose from these days. While one might offer you a variety of functions, another might have just the features you are looking for. So, choosing the appliance that’s ideal for you and your needs may prove to be difficult (not to mention time consuming). So, just to make things a bit easier for you, and less stressful, I thought that it would be a good idea to share my opinions on one of today’s top sellers…the Nesco Pressure Cooker PC4-14 .

Even though this Nesco pressure cooker may be on the list of the best electric pressure cookers, how does it really compare to other similarly priced models, and is it worth your hard earned money? We’ll have an in depth look at the pros and cons of owning the nesco pressure cooker, as well as its useful features and specs.

The Specs…

The Nesco Pressure Cooker PC4-14 , holds up to 4 quarts and measures 12 x 12.8 x 11.2  inches. It weighs approximately 9.4 pounds , and the shipping weight of the product is 12 pounds.

The item includes with a removable nonstick cooking pot for easy clean up, which is also dishwasher safe. The appliance comes with a number of safety features, such as: a self-locking lid that is activated when the unit is turned on, an automatic pressure release setting, cool touch handles, and a cool touch lid. A cooking rack that fits into the inner pot is also included.

This nesco pressure Cooker retails for around $85.00 plus shipping and handling if purchased online.

The Features of the Nesco Pressure cooker…

This unit offers a wide variety of features, including a control panel that is easy to read and use, which includes soft push button controls. There is also a precision thermostat that allows you to constantly monitor the cooking temp inside of the unit, to insure that you have full control over how the appliance is preparing your foods.

The Nesco Pressure Cooker offers four different functions: pressure cooking, browning, simmering, and sauteing. However, there is also a warming feature that you can switch on in order to keep your foods piping hot until you are ready to eat. The locking lid will stay secured until the pressure has been fully released, to insure that the flavors are sealed into your foods, and that no steam is allowed to escape during the cooking process.

The Pros…

Despite the fact that this is a small electric pressure cooker, it has a number of pros that may just prompt you to click that buy button (even if you are looking for a larger capacity). The cool touch handle and lid are a nice perk, since you won’t have to worry about burning yourself on the unit while it is on. This is particularly useful if you have children in the home. Also, the self locking lid feature is included for added safety.

Another thing about the nesco pressure cooker that stands out about this unit is that it is so versatile. You can practically make an entire meal from start to finish, even if there are several cooking steps involved. For instance, if you want to make a nice roast for dinner, you can brown the roast before pressure cooking it, and then even simmer it in a nice broth afterward for added flavor and texture. This can all be done with just this one appliance, rather than dirtying another pot or pan.

As for clean up, it doesn’t get much easier than the Nesco pressure cooker PC4-14. You simply remove the inner pot, which is non stick, and place it right into the dishwasher. You won’t need to worry about having to clean off stuck-on meats or veggies. The unit also comes with a cooking rack which easily fits into the inner pot, which is a wonderful bonus.

The Cons…

There are a few drawbacks to the nesco pressure cooker that I thought were worth mentioning. Firstly, the fact that the pressure cooker only goes up to 10 PSI is a bit disappointing, given that a majority of the recipes you’ll find online and in cookbooks call for 15PSI. So, you will have to adjust the cooking time if you are opting to use a recipe.

Also, the fact that it does only hold 4 quarts can be a problem, especially if you are looking for a cooker that can feed a large family or is able to fit a large roast or chicken. So, this particular model is probably better suited for individuals or couples who just want to make smaller all-in-one-meals or main dishes.

Lastly, it can sometimes take quite awhile to actually go into the pressurized cooking mode, especially if you’re used to stove top pressure cookers. So, you’ll need to keep that in mind when figuring out when to start your meal prep. This is particularly the case if you are entertaining guests and want everything to be ready by the time they arrive (as was the case with me).

The Bottom Line…

I highly recommend the nesco pressure cooker for anyone who is looking for a model that does it all. From cooking rice to making the perfect pot roast in a fraction of the time, this appliance will allow you to make a delicious, nutrient rich meal from start to finish.

With that being said, if you are in search of a model that can make larger meals and bulky food items, such as a whole chicken, then you may want to opt for the similarly priced Secura EPC-S600, which has a six quart capacity. That model will take up more space on your counter though. So, if you want a space saving appliance over one that offers a greater capacity, then I suggest you stick with the Nesco Pressure Cooker.

Breville Fast Slow Cooker BPR600XL – The Specs…

The Breville Fast Slow Cooker holds up to 6 quarts and measures 13.2 x 11.2 x 13 inches. It weighs approximately 11 pounds, and its shipping weight is 16 pounds.

The unit features a stainless steel design, which includes a 3-way safety system for added peace of mind. The appliance comes standard with the following bonus accessories: stainless steel steaming tray and trivet, spatula (heat resistant), measuring cup, and serving spoon.

This model retails for around $180.00 plus shipping and handling online.

Breville Fast Slow Cooker BPR600XL – The Features…

This appliance doubles as both an electric pressure cooker and a slow cooker. You can set the pressure cooking function to low, medium, or high, while the slow cooking option can run for up to 8 hours. This unit also has a variety of different functions, aside from those two primary options, including: sauteing, searing, pressure steaming, and a keep warm function.

The easy to use control panel is fully programmable, allowing you to just set the timer and forget it. The removable cooking insert is coated in non-stick material for easy clean up, on both the inside and out of the insert.

Breville Fast Slow Cooker BPR600XL – The Pros…

The Breville Fast Slow Cooker is so great because it offers you the best of both worlds. Not only does it pressure cook meats and veggies to perfection, but slow cooks stews and casseroles until they are just right. A vast majority of the cookers that are available today seem to do just one thing very well, and this unit is the exception to that rule.

The fact that you can sear the meats right in the cooker before pressurizing them is a big plus, because you don’t have to worry about dirtying another pan or making a mess of your stove top. Not to mention that you can also saute veggies to make them softer and bring out more flavor before steaming them.

You can make sauce reductions right in the pot as well. You just need to remove the meat and leave in the juices, add your thickener, and you have a delicious gravy or sauce in a matter of minutes (again, without dirtying another pot).

The steamer basket and rack insert that’s included with the unit is a big pro, given that you can keep meat out of the liquid while you’re pressurizing if you want it to be a bit drier. Many electric pressure cookers don’t come with one of these racks, unfortunately.

Last, but not least, it’s great that the timer doesn’t actually start counting down until the unit is pressurized. That means you won’t have to try and guess just how long it’s going to take, which really comes in handy if you want to serve your meal at a certain time (as is the case at dinner parties or get togethers).

Breville Fast Slow Cooker BPR600XL – The Cons…

There are really only a few small negatives in regards to this product. Firstly it can be a bit hard to clean if the contents drip onto the outside of the appliance. Also, the inner pot is non-stick, so it’s easy to clean, but it is rather thin and easily scratches. So, you may want to consider having a back up inner pot on hand just in case.

Another con is that the slow cooker function doesn’t have as many settings as I would have liked. Even though it works great as a slow cooker, the lack of options may be a bit of a downside. For example, if you want to slow cook something for 7 hours, you’ll have to manually shut it off at the 7 hour mark, as you can only set the timer to 6 or 8 hours, not in between.

Finally, the price of this unit is a bit seep, especially when compared to other models that we’ve mentioned on our site. A vast majority of the other electric pressure cookers are around $100, and this one is listed at about $180. So, if you’re looking for a more economical model, then the Breville Fast Slow Cooker probably isn’t the one for you.

I would recommend this appliance to anyone who’s looking for a versatile pressure cooker or slow cooker. In fact, I would even go so far as to say that, if you are in the market for a crock pot, you should get this instead. After all, it may be useful to have a reliable pressure cooker on hand should the need arise to make meats in a fraction of the time, right?

If you want a great pressure cooker and slow cooker, then this one is definitely worth the higher price tag if you can fit it into your budget. Especially since it is of exceptional quality and is probably going to last for years to come.

Picking out the right pressure cooker can be a daunting  task (even for the most experienced pressure cooks). So, instead of searching the web for reviews on today’s top models, we offer you the opportunity to have a look at reviews for today’s leading models, all in one place. We’ll let you know which electric pressure cooker is perfect for you and your family, so that you can avoid dreaded buyer’s remorse when purchasing your next cooker.

Deni 9740 Electric 4.2-Quart Pressure Cooker

January 2, 2014

Have you been scouring the web to find just the right electric pressure cooker for you and your family? If so, then you’ve definitely come to the right place. I know, from first hand experience, that the sheer abundance of choices out there today can make it challenging to find the cooker that has all the features you want at a price you can afford. As such, I thought I’d share my honest opinion about one of the most highly rated electric pressure cookers available today…the Deni 9740 Electric 4.2-Quart Pressure Cooker.

Sure this cooker may be a popular choice, but is it really worth your hard earned dollar? Do the cons far outweigh the pros, and is there possibly another selection that you may want to consider instead of this Deni model? In this review, I’ll take an up close look at its features, specs, and even the up and down sides to owning this product.

The Specs…

The Deni Pressure Cooker, holds up to 4.2 quarts and measures 15 x 11.5 x 12 inches. It weighs approximately 6.1 pounds , and the shipping weight of the product is 14.3 pounds.

It comes standard with a removable cooking pot coated with a non-stick material for easy clean up, which features stay-cool side handles. The exterior of the appliance is constructed from brushed stainless steel.

This model retails for around $115.00 plus shipping and handling online.

The Features…

This electric pressure cooker offers a number of useful features, including the ability to cook and both high and low pressure settings and a programmable timer for added convenience. The digital control panel allows you to access programmed settings with the touch of a button, making this unit extremely easy to use.

The delay cooking time feature allows you to set the cooker in advance, while the programmed settings include a wide range of options, including: warming, browning, and slow cooking.

For added security, they’ve also equipped it with a steam release valve, so that you can avoid pressure cooking related burns. The stay cool side handles also allow you to grab the unit without risk of injury.

The Pros…

One of the most significant pros of this product is that it operates very quietly. You won’t have to worry about the loud hissing or humming sound that a pressure cooking usually makes, nor will you have to put up with escaping food odors. The seals fit pretty snugly, which helps to seal in any smells.

Secondly, the fact that it has a non-stick interior is great for easy clean up. You won’t have to worry about scraping last night dinner out of the pot if you want to let the dishes go until the morning (which I tend to do on some occasions). It’s very easy to use as well. Some electric pressure cookers that you’ll come across today are almost impossible to operate (and their instruction booklets read like NASA manuals). However, this one is simple and straightforward, which is a big plus.

Also, it’s perfect if you want to make meals for 2 to 3 people, or side dishes, given its smaller quart capacity. You can save power, as it uses less energy than if you were to cook on the stove top, and allows you to seal in the flavors and juices of your foods. In addition, your foods actually contain more of their natural vitamins and nutrients, since you won’t have to cook them for as long and won’t have to use as much liquid.

The Cons…

There are a few cons that you’ll probably notice when using this product. First and foremost, it is not the most attractive pressure cooker on the market today, and it does take up quite a bit of room. In fact, you probably won’t want to leave it out on your counter, but will discover that it takes up a lot of space in your cabinets.

Also, it doesn’t have steaming capabilities, unless you purchase a steaming rack that you can insert into the unit, especially if you plan on steaming rice in the appliance. This means that you’ll have to pay more on top of what you’ve already spent on the unit (and it’s not necessarily the cheapest model available today).

The fact that you cannot simmer the food, as you can with the similarly priced Cuisinart CPC-600 is a minor setback, given that you will have to do that on the stove top after you’ve already pressure cooked your meals. For example, if you want to add in ingredients to a risotto or casserole, you will have to do that after the fact. This not only takes time, but requires that you dirty another pot in the process.

The Bottom Line…

—->> Click Here for Pricing, Pictures and Reviews on Amazon.com

This is a great unit if you’re looking for one that primarily pressure cooks. However, if you’re in search of an electric pressure cooker that simmers, steams, and cooks rice with ease, then you may want to look elsewhere. Also, it’s not really the least expensive option out there, especially given that it doesn’t include a variety of bells and whistles.

With that being said, its design is durable and it is very efficient when it comes to pressure cooking. It’s ideal for a smaller family, or even if you are only cooking for one and want some leftovers. Also, if you are new to the world of pressure cooking, this may be a great option for you, given that the programmable settings are easy to use and you probably won’t have any trouble figuring out how to use the cooker once you unpack it and plug it in. In fact, you’ll most likely be able to get cooking right away.

Deni 9770 Electric Pressure Cooker (2 Quart)

December 28, 2013

I thought it was important to preface this review by mentioning that I am a big fan of pressure cooking. I use my pressure cooker whenever possible, for the simple fact that it cuts down meal prep time and makes foods taste better. As such, I’ve gone through my fair share of electric pressure cooking appliances, and am always in pursuit of the perfect product.

Recently, I had the opportunity to try out the Deni 9770 Electric Pressure Cooker. A friend of mine had been raving about it, so I gave in and finally got one of my own, so that I could put it to the test and share my findings. Read my detailed review below to see the specs, pros and cons of this electric pressure cooker, and to find out if it received my stamp of approval.

The Specs…

This Deni Pressure Cooker has a two quart capacity. It measures 15 x 11.5 x 12 inches , and weighs about 6.1 pounds. The shipping weight of the product is also around 8 pounds. It uses 600-watts power while operating.

The outside of the appliance is made of brushed stainless steel, and includes a cool touch lid and handles, for safety. The product comes standard with a pressure safety lid locks, which allow for increased pressure build up and added security while the appliance is pressurized. It also features a  steam release valve, so that you can release pressure quickly and conveniently. The inner pot is removable, and includes a non-stick coating that is easy to clean.

This model goes for around $55.00 plus shipping and handling online.

The Features…

The Deni Pressure Cooker features an LED Display and digital control panel, making it easy to start cooking your meals in just seconds. Its innovative design also allows you to  reduce cooking time by up to 70%, when compared to stove top or oven cooking.

The delay time feature (which goes up to 9 hours) is a big plus for those who are always on the go, as it enables you to set the timer in advance and come home to a warm, delicious meal. Best of all, given that you use only a fraction of the liquid you would normally use, you can rest assured that your foods are going to retain a vast majority of their vitamins and minerals.

The compact design of this appliance makes it perfect for smaller spaces. However, even though it may be smaller, it still is extremely versatile for its size. There are various settings for preparing: chicken, beef, rice, soups, stews, and vegetables.

—->> Click Here for Pricing, Pictures and Reviews on Amazon.com

The Pros…

The best thing about this product is its size and design. Most electric pressure cookers on the market today are big and bulky. They not only take up a great deal of counter space, but storage space as well. That’s not the case with the Deni 9770 Electric Pressure Cooker. Despite the fact that it is more compact, it still feeds a family of four with ease.

The digital controls are also extremely simple and straightforward to use. Given that some of the other pressure cookers on the market today can have control panels can be challenging, to say the least, it’s refreshing to have pre-set settings that allow you to cook your favorite meals without scouring the web for appropriate cooking times or PSI settings.

The Dupont non stick inner pot (which features a Teflon Scratchguard surface) is ideal for quick clean up. You won’t have to spend time in the kitchen after the fact, trying to scratch off remnants of meats or grains, which is always a plus. The keep warm option is also great, since you won’t have to worry about your meal cooling down if the pressurization stops before you get home or are ready to eat.

The Cons…

There are just a few small cons that I have noticed for this particular pressure cooker. However, I must say that none of the setbacks I’m about to mention will be very significant for a vast majority of pressure cooker users. Firstly, the size of this cooker can be troublesome for some, especially if you want to make larger roasts or whole chickens, as it is only a 2 quart.

Also, you have to be careful about how much liquid you use, since this unit does take a bit of time to actually build up pressure. If you add in too much liquid, you can drastically lengthen cooking times and end up with less than desirable results.

Lastly, it can take quite some time for the unit to cool off once it’s done cooking. Since it has the keep warm function, you’ll have to turn that off and wait for about half an hour before even trying to touch the appliance, as the inner pot can stay rather hot. This also means that it’s not the safest unit to have in a household with curious children. However, you can just insure that you keep it out of their reach if you’re concerned about this.

The Bottom Line…

—->> Click Here for Pricing, Pictures and Reviews on Amazon.com

This is one of the most affordable models that I’ve reviewed, as well as the smallest, but it’s one that I’d definitely recommend to anyone who is only planning on preparing small meals or side dishes. All of the drawbacks to the product are rather small, in the grand scheme of things, and really shouldn’t keep you from giving this appliance a try if you’re in the market for a compact and efficient model.

If you would like a unit that has a wide range or pre-set settings, then this is ideal. It also has a feature that allows you to manually set your cooking time (but only for up to 99 minutes). So, if you’re looking for a do-it-yourself option for more complex or time consuming meals, then you may want to opt for another model, such as the Instant Pot IP-LUX60 6-in-1 Programmable Pressure Cooker. However, that also comes with a higher price tag.

Overall, if you are on the lookout for a budget friendly electric pressure cooker for smaller quantities of food, this is definitely the way to go.

This model retails for around $70.00 plus shipping and handling online.

71paoVNXF3L._SL1500_

The Features…

This pressure cooker includes a fair amount of features, especially considering the lower price point. It has an aluminum cooking pot that you can remove, which features non-stick coating.

The cool touch handles enable you to move the appliance, even when it’s warm, and the self locking lid includes a rubber casket (which means that you won’t have to worry about steam escaping while the unit is pressurized).

You’ll also find that it comes equipped with a pressure regulator and safety valve, for added peace of mind. The GoWISE Electric  Pressure Cooker includes a heating plate, as well, so that you can keep your meals warm for long after it’s been cooked.

You are able to carry out a wide range of functions with this electric pressure cooker. You can cook both brown and white rice, create tasty soups and stews, and make the perfect batch of chili or beans. A few other useful functions that it can carry out are: sauteing vegetables, browning meats before cooking, and slow cook. You can also adjust the pressure time, via the appliances +/- functions.

The Pros…

One of the best things about this model, without a doubt, is its ease of use. Some electric pressure cookers out there today are a challenge to operate, with directions that are complicated and disorganized. However, for this model the operations are simple and straightforward.

Clean up is also a cinch, thanks to the non-stick inner pot. It’s coated with Teflon, which means that you won’t have to spend hours trying to scrape off bits of meats or vegetables when it’s time to tidy up the kitchen after your meal.

Another thing that really stands out about this particular cooker is that it is quite versatile, especially for the lower price. You can saute vegetables before cooking them in order to soften them, or brown meats to seal in their juices before pressurizing the unit.

The utensils that it comes with (the steel rack, plastic spoon, and plastic cup) make meal prep even easier. And the instructions that it comes with are simple and straightforward, which is a huge plus. Also, while it’s running you really aren’t able to hear it, thanks to its near silent operation. In fact, you may even forget its on, since the safety lock on the lid ensure that no odors are able to escape either.

Last, but certainly not least, this unit actually comes with a programmable timer. So, you can set it in the morning before you leave for work or go out to run errands all day, and come home to a perfectly cooked meal.

 41CXWupDXEL

The Cons…

The fact that it has a aluminum Teflon-lined inner pot, rather than a stainless steel one, may be a major setback for some. So, if you want a more durable inner pot, you may want to opt for the  Instant Pot IP-LUX60, which does include a higher quality stainless steel construction.

Also, sometimes you’ll find that the pressure vs. release knob doesn’t quite line up as it should, which will allow steam to be released while the unit is pressured. You can easily fix this by just adjusting the knob once it’s begun cooking, but this may prove to be a bit problematic if you’re not at home when the cooker starts up.

Another thing that is definitely a con about this particular product is that the directions indicate KPA instead of PSI, as it wasn’t originally designed for the U.S. market. This is primarily because the product’s programmable functions allow you to simply choose what you are preparing, and it will automatically choose the proper settings. However, if you want to cook with a specific PSI, and have control over your own personal settings, then this may not be the pressure cooker for you.

—->> Click Here for Pricing, Pictures and Reviews on Amazon.com

The Bottom Line…

This unit is great if you’re looking for a more economical pressure cooker, as it does retail for about half of what many other similar electric cookers go for (such as the Cuisinart CPC-600 and the Instant Pot IP-LUX60).  However, it doesn’t have the same capacity as these other more expensive models.

With that being said, it does offer a lot for your money. Even though it does not have a large capacity, it is ideal for cooking meals intended for two or three people. You will have no problem fitting a whole chicken into the cooker though, so it is quite spacious for a 4 quart capacity model.
