Recently, I had the opportunity to give the Oster FPSTPC4801 5-Quart Electric Pressure Cooker, in Brushed Stainless Steel, a try. Anyone who knows me will tell you that I’m extremely finicky when it comes to my pressure cookers. I always look for one that has a myriad of useful features, is made to an exceptionally standard, and can last for years to come. Want to know how this pressure cooker fared during my rigorous testing?
In this review, I’ll share my findings with you, and offer you a detailed look at the advantages of owning this model, as well as the drawbacks. I will even delve into the specs and features that you’ll get with this Oster appliance, so that you can determine if it’s right for you and your family or if you may want to consider another unit.
The Oster FPSTPC4801 Electric Pressure Cooker holds up to 5 quarts and measures 14.1 x 13.4 x 14.2 inches. It weighs approximately 14.1 pounds , and the shipping weight of the product is 15 pounds. It utilizes 900 watts of power while pressurized.
The unit includes a non-stick inner pot and condensation reservoir, as well as removable power cord. The appliance comes standard with the following bonus accessories: paddle and measuring cup.
This model retails for around $78.00 plus shipping and handling online.
The Oster Pressure Cooker features a removable non-stick inner pot, which includes handles that are designed for comfortable, easy gripping, which is ideal if you are planning on moving the appliance quite often.
It also features a delay timer that allows you to program cooking up to 2 hours in advance, as well as an auto shut off feature for added convenience and energy efficiency. The keep warm function enables you to keep your foods piping hot for up to 3 hours, so that it’s ready to eat when you are.
This unit includes a browning option, as well, in addition to 6 programs which allow you to cook meat, fish, poultry, vegetables, and rice with ease (and in a fraction of time it would take to prepare them on the stove top or in the oven).
The Oster Pressure cooker offers an easy to use LED Display and push button panel, which includes an indicator for cooking, keep warm, and the timer.
One of the most convincing reasons for why you should purchase this product over other models is that is is very easy to use. The design isn’t too complex and the instruction are simple and straightforward. As such, if you are new to the world of pressure cooking, then this might be an ideal choice.
Secondly, the fact that you can brown and sear with this appliance is a big plus. A good number of the other units I’ve tried don’t have that option, which means that you’ll have to dirty another pan or pot if you want to lock in the flavor of your meat before putting them into the electric pressure cooker.
The quality of the unit is quite good. The stainless steel design is not only durable, but pleasing to the eye, and the think plastic handles should stand up to the test of time. Best of all, it is coated with a non-stick surface, so you won’t have to spend a great deal of time after prepping the meal cleaning off the leftover bits of meat and veggies that stuck to the bottom (as you would with stainless steel inserts).
Also, it does carry out a wide range of functions, and for a low price point. Most other units that have similar options are priced above $100, and this one is below $80. So, if you’re looking for an electric pressure cooker that gets the job done without costing a small fortune, then you’ll want to consider this one.
There are a few cons that I thought were worth mentioning. Firstly, the 2 hour start up delay function is a bit less than what I am used to, given that a vast majority of other similarly priced models allow you to set that timer for up to 24 hours in advance.
There is a recipe book included, but it is a bit lacking. Also, the measurements and directions that are included in the recipes are little off. So, you may want to think about purchasing a pressure cooker recipe book when you get this unit, just in case you want to begin cooking right when you pull it out of the box. With that being said, you an always hop online and find a wide range of great recipes for free.
Lastly, it doesn’t have a manual setting. As such, if you want to customize your settings, you’ll have to choose from one of the programmed options and plus or minus the time you’d like to leave your meal in there to cook for. So, this isn’t necessarily a problem, just a minor inconvenience.
The Bottom Line…
For the low price point, you just can’t go wrong with this appliance. If you’re looking for an affordable, dependable, and well built electric pressure cooker, then you’ll definitely want to include this one on your list. It’s multifunctional, it’s efficient, and it can pressure cook meats and veggies to perfection. Not to mention that you can sear, brown, and keep your foods warm all by using just this one appliance.
